Here is what I don’t understand; the Sabbath day.  It’s not that I don’t get the day, but the so-called Christian view of the Sabbath day.  How does the Christian world see the Sabbath day?  What do people do on the Sabbath day?  Does the Christian world treat the Sabbath any differently than any other day?

Read Exodus 20: 8-11

The word Sabbath comes from a Hebrew word meaning rest.  I know what you’re thinking, time to sit on the couch, kick your feet up and sleep right?  Wrong…  It’s time to watch football!  Nope, that’s not it either.

Now read Genesis 2:1-3

The Sabbath day is every seventh day or Sunday.  It is a holy day ordained by God for us to rest from our daily labors and worship Him.  We are resting from the daily grind, the rat race, the work paced life we live.  It’s a day of worship.  It’s a day to do something different than the other six days of the week.  It’s a day for our benefit.

Read Mark 2:27

Here is the basic rule of the Sabbath:  Does the activity draw you closer to the Lord or does it distance you from the Lord?  That is a question only you can answer.  I can assure you if that thing is going wakeboarding, playing soccer, purchasing things at the store, etc.  You are NOT getting closer to the Lord.

If you are doing things like spending quality time with your family, visiting families in need, praying to our Heavenly Father, listening to uplifting music, performing service, attending church, telling faith-promoting stories, teaching children or any constructive thought or act; then you are obeying the Holy day.  Again, if you are doing something like the list above then you are probably doing what the Lord has intended for you to do on the Sabbath day.  This day should be and feel different from every other day of the week.

We should do only things which allow us to give full attention to spiritual matters.

You might have noticed I mentioned “purchasing things at the store”.  Now you’re probably wondering why not that on the Sabbath?  Come on people!  If you’re a Christian and don’t know the 10 Commandments that’s a pretty sad affair!

Exodus 20:10

If you’re going to the store then someone is working.  Yes, I promise it’s possible for you to prepare just a little and get the basics out of the way on Saturday.  Reserve Sunday for spiritual matters!  It’s not about YOU!  It’s about the Lord!  Put your own interests aside for just a minute and focus on something more important.

What does Isaiah 58:13 say?

In conclusion:  Sunday is a special day and I just don’t understand how many Christians don’t seem to understand or obey this law.  Is it because it’s hard?  Is it because it doesn’t fit in their plans?  Is it because we are a self indulged society?  I don’t know, but I have several books of scripture in my religion and other religions only have the Bible.  If that is the case why is my religion the only one to actually follow the Bible?  The 10 commandments are meant to be the most basic of law.  They are the base and the backbone of obedience.  Let’s just get these down first and graduate to higher laws later.
